Defeat - Japanese Beetles and Bag
The Japanese beetle is probably the
most devastating pest of urban landscape plants in
the East and Mid-west. Adult Japanese beetles are
7/16-inch long metallic green beetles with
copper-brown wing covers. A row of white tufts
(spots) of hair project from under the wing covers
on each side of the body. Adults emerge from the
ground and begin feeding on plants in June. Activity
is most intense over a 4 to 6 week period beginning
in late June, after which the beetles gradually die
off. Individual beetles live about 30 to 45
days. Japanese beetles feed on about 300 species of
plants, devouring leaves, flowers, and overripe or

CONCERN for this year’s GARDENS
With all the spring rain, it is
expected that we’ll have early blight in many
Early blight is caused by the fungus
Symptoms first appear on the lower,
older leaves as small brown spots with concentric
rings that form a “bull’s eye” pattern. As the
disease matures, it spreads outward on the leaf
surface causing it to turn yellow, wither and die.
Eventually, the stem, fruit and upper portion of the
plant will become infected.
Early Blight is spread by splashing
rain, irrigation, insects and garden tools.
The disease is also carried on tomato seeds and in
potato tubers. Early Blight can occur any time
throughout the growing season. High
temperatures (80-85°F) and wet, humid conditions
promote its rapid spread. In many cases,
poorly nourished or stressed plants are attacked.
Here are some tips to prevent or help control.
Great for organic gardens.
Apply every 7 – 10 days from
start of planting

Rotate crops: Early Blight remains active for a
year. Spores can be dormant in the soil for seven
Give tomatoes extra space to allow air to move among
leaves to keep them dry.
Water the soil, not the plant, to prevent
splashing. Avoid overhead watering.
Mulch with black plastic or landscape fabric to help
keep soil from splashing on leaves.
